Dish(onour)

Dish(onour)

In an attempt to break another stereotype, of women ‘belonging in the kitchen’, I portrayed the main object onto ceramic dinner plates. The main object is a figure half male, half female to show how a house task belongs to both genders. I used the ‘typical’ shades used to define each gender, red for females and blue for males. I used the hard material of clay to depict the legs of a boy, to portray the stereotype of boys being strong and robust. I used a doll as a female figure, since dolls are controllable figures and acted as the best mediums to present how the females are controlled by the society, as if they are a toy. My depiction of the genders show how the society lacks in respecting females and displays ‘dishonour’ towards them. With a curvier and flowerier design to the girl’s plate, inspired by the flowery pattern of the magical collection of ‘EktaWorks’, and a straighter, clearheaded, chequered pattern to the boy’s plate, I bring out the stereotypes throughout plate.
