Buttoning Up Communities
In my journey through the LGBT+ community, I was overwhelmed by how each segmented community works together to express their sentiments freely. I took my inspiration from my own experience as a part of the community. I echo that the communities, even with their differences (portrayed by the differentiated and parted strokes of the colors), come together to expresses multiple emotions of pain, anger, and distress that they feel.
I incorporated symbolism in every material used, to make the artwork relate to the emotions it expresses, as a whole. I have spray colored the buttons, using hues of the official LGBT+ community flag, and layered them over blocks of acrylic paint. This forms up into the face of the yearning man representing the communal bond shared by all.
This specific piece talks about the darkness present in the society towards the LGBT+ community. I relate to the buttons are used as a metaphor for the tie-up of the communities, against the dark thoughts and comments of the rest of the society, which I have symbolized by the black wooden board.
This artwork was made when I was going through one of the most crucial phases of my life. The acceptance of one's true identity in a constrictive environment had been a fairly common phenomenon. Although, the journey I went upon eventually showed me that I had more conflict with myself than I did with the society. My parents and all those around me were extremely supportive of my time and helped me escape the loop of insecurities I was stuck in.
